Peter Feigin, president of the Milwaukee Bucks. Feigin, who had held executive positions at Madison Square Garden, Marquis Jet Partners and NetJets, packed up his New York home and went to Milwaukee in 2014. Peter Feigin: I mean, my mouth just watered. While Feigin can watch Antetokounmpo and the Bucks any time he wants on NBA 2K or social media -- "The truth is our digital channels are ten times like what our local broadcasts are," he says -- he has the distinct pleasure in Milwaukee of actually getting to catch the action in person. How do we continue to not only understand it, but monetize it in a very big way? Were going to constantly improve. Theyre going to look at that ring forever and remember that. Where were you on sports? Just my own exposure was mixed in what are best practices for centralized services. But for us, it's kind of like, "How do we make an equal playing field? How do you balance a world and a sports world, especially, thats become so excited about, what Billy Beane created in terms of data analytics and the importance of numbers with the human capital element. Peter: Well, its having like Ive always said, people talk about their personal board of directors and what that is and I had the advantage and still have the advantage of my mother being the best consultant you could possibly have. So, I can't be too vocal, because if the owners knew how valuable it was that, I conceptually run a retail operation with thousands of pieces of apparel. Which is a huge opportunity. Peter Feigin: So, my job is pretty simple, like how do I build the trust with them? You are in a community thats not only sports crazy, but very community minded, the Packers, the Badgers, the Bucks are all very community involved. Since 3-pointers are worth 2 points and 2-pointers are only worth 1, there is a strong premium on outside shooting. Feigin's twin brother, Daniel, is director of the upper school at New York City's Trevor Day. They better know you, they better get you. And probably about 15 years ago, Mark Lazari was looking to explore buying teams and they were in a parent conference, and my brother just said to him, Hey, my twin brothers over at Madison Square Garden he runs the marketing there he understands the P&L you probably get a kick out of him coming with you and giving you an opinion on what that was. Make a long story short, we probably spent the next 10 years having the most incredible adventures of going to do due diligence on teams that he was prospecting to buy. Talk about the journey to the Bucks and how did that happen and then why Milwaukee? Off the court it is best practice. What would you be doing? Its really important and youve got to take a real responsibility. Talk a little bit on a fun topic, when I was reading up about you and the team and everything else, I read about this new venture you guys got going over in Wisconsin called the Cluckery and I got hungry looking at the website and looking at the menu. In all, about 100 players have played in The Run over the decades, some more luminous than others. Feigin, 50, calls his game the Saturday Morning Run popularly known among its members as The Run or S.M.R. and he has a massive collection of T-shirts to prove it. Because I know a lot of coaches, lot of presidents, lot of GMs, I run into them and I ask them, can I look at your ring? Well, a year ago, yesterday, we went to zero. But in a short period of time, the prospect and the opportunity of just not running a team, but kind of building a city and the real estate and the expansion and kind of where Milwaukee was as a city and kind of an inflection point was just kind of one of these miracle situations. By the way, its so much fun. And the family went into the most unique times that we've ever seen in our lifetime a year ago. Malcolm D. Peter Feigin: And for a year of that, I kind of dropped everything and just kind of toured the country with an organized schedule, kind of understood the revenue part of it, kind of do. And I think the only thing anybody can control is their own effort and kind of their own dreams and where they want to go. And I'm not that much of a spiritual person, but I feel like I have been blessed/lucky 10 times more than I ever thought I'd be in my whole life. Michael Red: And so, through all of the minutiae and all of 2020 and now going into the new season, which we're in now, managing to still focus the organization on winning the championship. He's with us today. What are the balances of management, of coaching of anything else? I took great pride in seeing the development of downtown and what you guys were doing with the city. So, whole different world kind of came around with COVID. Feigin says Bucks Gaming will consist of roughly 10 full-time employees, including the team's five players, who will be housed by the franchise. Peter: Then I think youre, listen, viewer consumption, what youre talking about is whether you put on an Oculus or whether youve got five screens going up, people are now watching short form video in five to 20 second increments to absorb a game. For naming rights, Feiginsaid the franchise is looking for an international brand willing to spend $7 million to $10 million annually for 20 years. How do we attack every day with how can we resource everybody who works here to be able to do their job very well. Talk about having arguably the greatest player in the world on your team. When I was looking at the website, I was like, man, I cant wait to taste that chicken. My wife and I have known each other since high school. They all had the space, they're at Disney, they have all the amenities. Peter Feigin: I think building the relationship with Mark, probably through looking at other purchase opportunities and kind of talking through it. Peter Feigin: And you create this really confusing, frustrating, challenging environment that, Mike, when you were playing, maybe you had a few performance psychologist. We are brand marketing sales people. Its hundreds of rings. "I did kind of the 'Dick Cheney.' Before life as we knew it went on hiatus in March, Peter Feigin was occasionally returning to New York from Milwaukee for weekend visits and to rejoin The Run, which has become multigenerational. Then I think as we keep exploring and kind of whats happening with online gambling and whats happening with NFTs and whats happening in the ticketing business, that it all evolves with technology, will be really interesting. John: Hundreds. It was, like you couldn't even, if you had a thousand scenarios, of what the last year could be for the Milwaukee Bucks and what you're kind of thinking about and dealing with, it's just been a pretty incredible ride and ton of emotion. Antetokounmpo, now in his fifth NBA season, has become a basketball and cultural phenomenon. And kind of like who are intrinsically becoming Buck stars and having them be our influencers around the world and thinking about global campaign. Then you mirror that off the court. Because I hadnt worked in, Id worked in New York city. And with that, Feigin became the business brains behind a team about to set NBA standards in architecture, basketball operations and technology -- only he didn't know it. And it's kind of as an adult got me to a place where I desperately want our youth to get exposed to things they wouldn't normally get exposed to because that's how they learn what's out there. You got to be someone that actually that enjoys being here and part of the family culture and part of an organization. Its like, hey, I worry about the execution. It's a simple filter to go through things, if we have to question it, we're pretty sure its wrong," shared Feigin. Talk about the importance of having diversity in the front office particularly. In July 2015, Feigin basically introduced himself to Wisconsin lawmakers with a stark proposal: If $250 million in public funding was not approved -- Edens, Lasry, third owner Jamie Dinan and Kohl had already combined to put up $250 million) -- the NBA would exercise its right to buy back the Bucks from the new ownership group for $25 million more than it had paid Kohl. It was July. Because there's a lot of founders and entrepreneurs that listen to this as well and managing that dynamic with their family.
